Monday Love 03:52
"Monday Love" [Kent] Monday/you couldn't wait another day/ Chasing/some unpromised joy/ Like the songs of love you loved/so well come true/ This cannot be denied/another day/my Monday Love/ My Monday Love... Monday/outside the hotel/rain fell/ You smile/Some kind of test I passed/ Lovely velvet hurricane/blasting, passing through/ This cannot be denied/til our someday/my Monday Love/ My Monday Love...
2.
"Big Hot Tears" [Kent] No reason/They took my toys away/ I wanna go home/but I can't/Have to stay/ I have to wait here/where the minutes/pass/like years/ Big hot tears/fill my eyes/ Big hot tears/I can't see through/ Big hot tears/Big hot tears/ Cos I miss you... No friends/anywhere/and no place to play/ TV's broken down/and it's a rainy day/ I can't take no more chores/Go on/Box my ears/ Big hot tears/fill my eyes/ Big hot tears/I can't see through/ Big hot tears/Big hot tears/ Cos I miss you... Shut up, they say/or they'll/give me/ something to cry about/ But that can't stop my/big hot tears/from flooding out/ If I saw you/just for a sec/ If you found me here/ The sun would shine/and dry my big hot tears... Big hot tears/fill my eyes/ Big hot tears/I can't see through/ Big hot tears/fill my eyes/ Big hot tears/Big hot tears...
3.
Finally 04:02
"Finally" [Kent] Finally caught up on my sleep today/ Sullen circles/under my eyes/ have finally/ Gone away/ And with this rested mind/ I look around me/ and what do I/newly see/ Finally? The gutter/the clutter/the bread unbuttered/ A thousand subtle cuts/undiscussed/unuttered/ A life unbuttoned/Is there some other/ Way for me to be/ Finally? A day for sloppy calculation/ Grasping for self preservation/or even/ Restoration/ And with this charcoal-activated mind/ I find it/hard to sleep/ Finally/ The gutter/the clutter/the bread unbuttered/ A thousand subtle cuts/undiscussed/unuttered/ A life unbuttoned/Is there some other/ Way for me to be/ Finally?
4.
Solid Gray 05:41
"Solid Gray" [Kent] I woke up/today/the light was solid gray/ No Summer/No Winter/No Fall/or Spring/ No birds/nor angels sing/today/ Solid gray/Solid gray... You can go/I'll stay/and sundown's solid gray/ The blanket overhead/of lead/remains/ No Moon/Stars/or other stains/have play/ Solid gray/Solid gray... Look for the bright colors/ A passing car/a tossed bouquet/ See how fiercely/they stand out/ Against the sullen/solid gray/ Solid gray/Solid gray/ Solid gray... Sadly so/someday/All too soon you'll see me solid gray/ No photo/No mirror/All the best laid/ Color schemes/to our dismay/gang aft agley/ Solid gray/Solid gray/Solid gray/Solid gray...
5.
"Late or Later" [Kent] I'll deal with it all/when I get back/ Don't wait up for me/Everything's a mess/ Don't wait up for me/ That would be/ an exercise, my dear/ in pointlessness/ Or wait/til I get back/ I'll be late/or later than that/ If you wait/greet me warmly/ Don't attack/ I'll be late/or later than that... Our love is stretched thin/but I can't leave/ I can say, "I love you,"/Everything's a mess/ I can say, "I love you,"/over and over/ from here, my dear/ to meaningless/ Or wait/til I get back/ I'll be late/or later than that/ If you wait/greet me warmly/ Don't attack/ I'll be late/or later than that... Keep an open mind/til you've heard my side/ Keep an open mind/til you've looked in my eyes/ Soon as I get home/which may take a little/ a lot more time/ Or wait/til I get back/ I'll be late/or later than that/ If you wait/greet me warmly/ Don't attack/ I'll be late/or later than that...

about

"The First" is a kind of concept album. The concept being: get something out there FIRST, so I have something to sell at gigs and play for venues at which I hope to be booked.

At 49 years of age (!!!) it's a fine time to start one's music career completely from scratch, but here I am. I imagine all kinds of rich album oriented rock albums to pour forth in the years to come, and this EP will be distinguished as "The First."

(Note: if, in fact, it also turns out to be "the last," it means something debilitating has happened to me, and to send help QUICK!!)

It's an ill time in history to be a singer songwriter, I think, as the very term tends to connote a fey, folky individual in an oversize sweater and not the hale stalwarts of the classic rock era: Joe Walsh, Richard Thompson, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello and such. Fellows that were expected to rock as much as feel "the pain of it all." Fellows apt to express things with a dark humor more than mere irony. If it's not too late, I'll prefer to camp with them as I set out than the sons of the Mumford clan, if you please. (Although I do like them, too.)

By way of introduction to this initial collection of five songs, it's a Whitman Sampler of guitars: "Monday Love" showcases the Jay Turser 3-string octave bass, "Big Hot Tears" is the Eko guitar/bass 5-string octave hybrid, "Finally" has the Ocean Laguna 3-string bass, "Solid Gray" is the Eastwood guitar/bass octave hybrid, and "Late or Later"—the only track with 2 guitars dubbed together—has the Gibson Studio 3 string octave guitar and the Jay Turser 3 string octave bass.

For percussion, I overdubbed a Korg WaveDrum Oriental, trying to add a bit of a World flavor overall.

The EP was recorded in my home studio in the backyard, on a Zoom mrs1608, never using more than 10 tracks.

The cover art is all mine, as well, with a nod toward long-term branding, a-la Grateful Dead, where album cover art becomes iconic and applied to bumperstickers and t-shirts. In my case, that...thing in the square was an attempt to draw a specific object that went somewhat awry. In looking at it again, I saw a kind of Rorschach quality to it, perhaps, where anyone looking at it might see something very different than what I meant it to be. Write me and let me know what you see in it. If you guess it right, I'll tell you.

So I sort of rushed this EP out to coincide with my marketing plans/career launch. I've got an extensively good full album I'm working on to be released in the Spring of 2013, Lord willing, and that will be my first album, but today, here's "The First - EP."

Claxton Kent Portland, Oregon

"...I didn't grow up rich, but my father did. He owned a ranch in Texas with over ten thousand dairy cows. Those cows didn't give milk, though, they gave oil. That is a true fact. Those cows were so valuable they weren't branded, they were engraved..." excerpted from Claxton: A Life-like Life. ... more
